<br />
It is virtually impossible to describe the Edwardian Ball. Based on the work of Edward Gorey. Known for his macabre line drawings and books. He was the original Goth. To find out more about his work, check out<br />

<br />
It's not really a ball, so much as a sideshow, circus, theater, art, music, costume, extraveganza. I can't do it justice. Check out their Gallery for photo's and videos of the actual <a href="http://edwardianball.com/photos-2/" target="_blank">event</a>.<br />
<br />
Freed from the contraints of historical accuracy, I was able to gather together some previously constructed gowns I had made and throw all the brothel drapes at them. There is a professional cameraman both nights. The lines are looooooong, but they serve booze in line. This is something that would improve all lines if you ask me. Just imagine how much more pleasant the DMV would be.<br />
<br />
Of course the drinks are very expensive, $14 to $16 dollars a piece. Hence the invention of crotch vodka. It's a thing. No I don't want to talk about it. I'll tell you later. No really, we'll talk about it later. Who knows who's watching.<br />
<br />
Enough talk. Pictures.<br />

Yes. I have found my people. Can't wait to move closer to them and all the wacky decadence that San Francisco has to offer.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00743696158454339015noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311143154365625848.post-79965425986401278242014-12-11T17:54:00.000-08:002014-12-11T17:54:36.218-08:00Proof of Life postHI! I'm here! I have been making stuff and have some mighty big life plans. So this random blog post promises to be ALL OVER THE PLACE. Are ya' ready?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
1. I went to the eye doctor for the first time in a long time because my insurance pays for new lenses and frames every two years. I got home and found my old glasses and sure enough I had picked out the exact same frames. Le Sigh. I almost never wear them. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitN4kObBa1zm4eyV-v8US1r8e34SJBWZMMjC747c-aq1uy8ivgnMi7IQT7sdI0SoRwc3kLqQobnrJN6Ma-Z6oq9WW_PtrPysZZYScUpbLblsAINZwwaAt6q_Q3KUT0tBxh8tY8TJNigUE/s1600/higherthanthestars_crimstp_large.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitN4kObBa1zm4eyV-v8US1r8e34SJBWZMMjC747c-aq1uy8ivgnMi7IQT7sdI0SoRwc3kLqQobnrJN6Ma-Z6oq9WW_PtrPysZZYScUpbLblsAINZwwaAt6q_Q3KUT0tBxh8tY8TJNigUE/s1600/higherthanthestars_crimstp_large.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Although they might be my daughters. </td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
2. I'm leaving my job! Don't ask why I didn't lead with that. I told you this was going to be random. Because I reached the ripe age of 50 (1), I can take early retirement from my job and take my pension. I take a big hit on taxes and stuff because I'm doing it early, but I kind of enjoy this fashion/sewing thing and would like to give it a try fer reals.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnscHsWlbnhQ34NS-9oU7DSw5vUkASkS7M4YSO1Aa0ublNwNtGFXMcOB5Yv1xBMhMSu_sT_6Hk_NT3mjJRiuc7XHWZuCuTG4cJdqxQF5T_DBHi47nDUculLUAG91TFndyCsegmimk_-M4/s1600/52717d6a1c957c0b912969e90bc15b0c864f9ce2708aa7cc9ced36319eb0f308.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnscHsWlbnhQ34NS-9oU7DSw5vUkASkS7M4YSO1Aa0ublNwNtGFXMcOB5Yv1xBMhMSu_sT_6Hk_NT3mjJRiuc7XHWZuCuTG4cJdqxQF5T_DBHi47nDUculLUAG91TFndyCsegmimk_-M4/s1600/52717d6a1c957c0b912969e90bc15b0c864f9ce2708aa7cc9ced36319eb0f308.jpg" height="320" width="293" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Like Noonish is good</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
3. So rather than do the above, I've decided to go back to school! I'm finally going to take those fashion design courses I've always wanted. Time to learn pattern drafting and draping and do this thing!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

So...true story. I only got a few pictures of my costume. I know that's a shocker, so you might want to sit down for that. On Saturday night I got all dolled up and went to see my daughter's band play. (<a href="http://www.theincitersmusic.com/" target="_blank">The Inciters</a>, check them out. )Turns out the only other people in costume were in the band. It's okay, I won ALL the prizes. My daughter took a few quick shots before the band went on.<br />

She's in the UK, so I didn't get to fit it on her, so I put grommets in the back for her to lace up. Someday, when I'm a grown-up blogger, I will take many photos of my work in progress. Since I didn't do that, I'm just going to hope you are satisfied with how lovely she looks in it.<br />

The trim I used on the cape was really neat. It's silver and very ethereal. It really looks like frost, even close up.<br />
<br />
I'm over my head in ruffles for my can-can skirt these days. I don't have a ruffler, so I've been using the gathering foot on my machine. I need FOURTY yards of finished ruffles. FOURTY!!! I literally sewed for an entire day, well into the evening this weekend and ended up with twenty. Aaargh. I love the way ruffles look, but they are making my life miserable. (Boy will they be cool though)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00743696158454339015noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311143154365625848.post-13997633614947416112014-09-24T13:13:00.000-07:002014-09-24T18:21:57.987-07:00My Alter Ego Finally Gets Her Own Costume<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For Halloween this year I will be participating in a really cool event put on by the Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild. Called <a href="http://www.gbacg.org/current/spirits-shadows.php" target="_blank">Spirits and Shadows</a>. In their own words, "Join the mad scientists, Victorians, Steampunk time travelers, grave
diggers, ghosts, ghouls, and vampires as we wander through the park
where the veil between this life and the next is stretched thin for an
adult only evening of dance and fun at History Park at Kelly Park in San
Jose" Check out the website for details.<br />
<br />
I'm going to be working the event, and I've decided to do an Edwardian fancy dress version of a Gypsy. Specifically this costume is usually representing Esmeralda, the Gypsy girl from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Decidedly NOT the Disney version. Esmeralda just happens to be the nickname of of my alter ego, but it'll take more than a few drinks to get those stories out of me.<br />
<br />
Here's the Inspiration. All photos from <a href="http://www.metmuseum.org/" target="_blank">The Metropolitan Museum Online</a>. This costume is actually circa 1880, but since it's a Fancy dress costume I don't really need to stick to any one time period. Essentially people would be pulling old clothes from their grandparents attics and redoing them, so I can play a little fast and loose (speaking of Esmeralda) with this.<br />

I got some great scores on Silk on Ebay. I'm using dupioni because it is cheaper, and also because it's a Gyspy costume, so the slubbiness of silk will add to that exotic flavor.<br />

I have my work cut out for me and about three weeks to do it in, so I'm going to bite the bullet and use my sewing machine. In fact I better order a ruffle foot for that can-can skirt. Even though the twenties is not necessarily my favorite time period in terms of how the fashion flatters my figure. I do appreciate the opulance and elegance of the time. Until, you know, Dust Bowl, Prohibition and Depression and all that. Still its a lovely fantasy and that's what all this is about.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00743696158454339015noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311143154365625848.post-91211651003017078712014-09-10T15:44:00.001-07:002014-09-10T15:44:48.328-07:00Costume College Professional PicturesThese photos were all taken by <a href="http://photos.theshotwellcollection.com/" target="_blank">Andrew Schmidt</a> for Costume College 2014.<br />

On Friday Night, we had the Ice Cream Social. Being a lagger, I completely missed the ice cream, but Tanya and I snuck out for a little sumthin sumthin at the bar. There's also gin in that flask, but funny enough, I never got around to drinking it. <br />

1980's Thrift Store dress with the shoulder pads and sleeves removed. Thrift store spangled purse. Headband cobbled together from Joannes, Shoes I've had forever from Macy's. Stockings from thrift store rolled down with rolling garters from the CoCo marketplace and a flask from the marketplace.<br />
<br />
Saturday night was the Gala. You've heard me kvetching about putting that together already. Here's the whole finished look. <br />

The plaid silk was won in a raffle. The skirt, overskirt and bodice are all Truly Victorian patterns. The black trim was removed from a tutu I found in my garage. I have my hair up in a hair piece I made from a long gray cosplay wig. Gloves I found at the thrift store.<br />
<br />
I am wearing a bustle under there, it just was half of a pair of pocket panniers I made with really cheap plastic boning. It didn't have enough umph to keep everything up. The flowers were also kind of stuck on last minute also. It's also too short. I will save this one. I have silk left, so I'm going to make a large pleated ruffle to go around the bottom to lengthen it. I'll also make a real bustle to wear under it. I plan on making a lot more goo ga's to add to the overskirt also.<br />
<br />
On Sunday Afternoon we had the Ascot Tea. I already had my walking skirt and gibson girl blouse I made for the Asilomar event. I added a black wool jacket I found at the thrift store and a hat I made for a Mae West costume I wore a few years back. Those are totally the same flowers from my bosom the night before.<br />

I do think the jacket is worth reworking for real. I may end up making it into a 1930's or 40's jacket instead of an Edwardian. The purse was also found at the thrift store.<br />
<br />
I did get a pretty good Facebook profile pic out of it.<br />

<br /></div>
The world just lost another broad. First Elaine Stritch, then Lauren Bacall and now Joan Rivers. How would I define a broad? A broad is a woman (never a girl) who says what's on her mind with a quick witted quip. A broad can wear stilettos and a pencil skirt and drink whiskey straight from the bottle and apply her lipstick without looking in the mirror. A broad loves men and they love her back. She may take you down a peg if you deserve it, but she'll be the first one to have your back if you don't. She dishes it out, she takes it and she doesn't suffer fools gladly. She can swear like a sailor and dine with the queen. Broads are funny and bawdy and sexy as hell. I aspire to be a broad. I used to think you had to be old to be a great broad, but I think I'm going to keep practicing.<br />

There are quite a few professional photos up already, if you want to check them out they are here: <a href="http://photos.theshotwellcollection.com/costumecollege" target="_blank">The Shotwell Collection</a>. I'm waiting until I see all the shots of me before I decide which ones to buy.<br />
<br />
My first priority is the Elsa dress, but my next event is <a href="http://www.gatsbysummerafternoon.com/" target="_blank">The Gatsby Summer Afternoon</a>, which is put on by <a href="http://artdecosociety.squarespace.com/" target="_blank">The Art Deco Society of California</a>. Gosh, I'm all kinds of linky today. I found these two items at the thrift store, which I will bibbity bobbity boo into either a 20's or 30's picnic dress. They are both very tiny, so it might take a little more bibbity than bobbity to make this happen, if you know what I mean. You do? That's good, because I'm not entirely sure. There's this cute little ruffled skirt.<br />

I also found this dress. Also teeny tiny. It has no label in it. I think it's silk, but it may be rayon. It looks right and feels right though, so it should pass muster.<br />

I bought it originally because I thought I could use it to take apart for a 20's dress or something. You know what though? What Tracey? I'm thinking I want to start being more fabulous. More stylie. Maybe even stylish. I love all the shiny things. If I took the shoulder pads out and paired it with something rougher; like a leather jacket or a wool skirt, that could be really cool I think. I may just start collecting these things. It'll be my jam. <br />

Now excuse me while I get back to handsewing hundreds of sequins on the bodice.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00743696158454339015noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311143154365625848.post-46811368522188208722014-08-19T18:34:00.001-07:002014-08-19T18:34:53.246-07:00Stress Cake and Anxiety Salad, Saturday at Costume CollegeThis blog post had too many words. Saturday was a mixed bag for me. We had arrived on Wednesday and I only had to finish the trim on my Gala dress, so I thought I would have plenty of time. I just didn't. So when Saturday rolled around, I was a stress case. I had my only limited attendance class; "It's the 1860's and still handsewn" I didn't think this would be a problem for me since I've actually sewn an entire Dickens dress by hand before. I kind of thought it would be cake.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Stress Cake</td></tr>

The class started out fine. We practiced some hand sewing. I was actually a little further ahead than some of the people around me, so I was feeling a little cocky. Then the part happened that I had completely forgotten about. "we will fit your bodice using a 19th Century pattern system and then you will start construction" I hadn't worn my corset, so when we were going to begin the fitting process, I had to run to my room to put on my corset.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEjjTMW_OQngrM5XjLEmcXGe7LXoE1-4IFq15RI8Kd3RZC16iYLL4rPmJvuwXwzbD-OSOnRk1xWK14GeBzLPJMf_3S40hLscx0PJvj_4FmHVkVRA1UDlQJRtKJbrgnWizWg52Fk2XDWfc/s1600/runlolarun.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEjjTMW_OQngrM5XjLEmcXGe7LXoE1-4IFq15RI8Kd3RZC16iYLL4rPmJvuwXwzbD-OSOnRk1xWK14GeBzLPJMf_3S40hLscx0PJvj_4FmHVkVRA1UDlQJRtKJbrgnWizWg52Fk2XDWfc/s1600/runlolarun.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bonus points if you know what movie this is from</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I ran up to my room and grabbed my corset. Even though I had laced it to make it possible to put on myself, I COULD NOT GET IT ON. I was getting increasingly agitated, not knowing if they were waiting for me, not knowing if it just didn't fit me anymore. Arrrgh. Finally, I just grabbed it and ran back downstairs to class hoping someone would just help me put it on.<br />
<br />
Well. I had completely not taken into account the fact that we were going to be draping the pattern for each other and I would be completely responsible for the fitting of someone else's costume. I have draped a piece of clothing for another person zero times. Nope, nope, nope. Here's the thing. I am great in a crisis. I have saved lives. Literally. I'm the person you want in a zombie apocolype, but my being responsible for a fitted bodice for another costumer, nope, nope, nope again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For some reason, I had though we would be fitting our own bodice. On ourselves. This would be almost impossible, so I don't know why I thought this, but I did. I just couldn't do it. I couldn't stay. They thought of trying to maintain while pinning on another person that I didn't know, just started giving me that 'Wa wa' feeling in my head. Any of you who have had anxiety attacks or a panic attack know that feeling. So I calmly took the teacher aside and kind of explained what was going on and that I just couldn't stay. She was very very nice, but I was twenty kinds of relieved to get out of the classroom.<br />
<br />
Since I now had a large chunk of free time ahead of me, I decided the best thing to do was just sew. I ran into Jennifer (of <a href="http://sosteadyasshesews.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">So Steady as she Sews</a>) and of being a friend, and told her what happened and she was calm and I felt better. I went to the Marketplace again because shopping is my happy place and ran into my roomate Tanya, who is one of the most maternal people I have met and I felt even better.<br />
<br />
I went to the room and grabbed my bodice and sewing stuff. I decided to go up to the Hospitality Lounge so I would be around other people sewing last minute stuff. No one was sewing though, so I decided to head to the bar to sew (as you do) Now that was super positive. I sat next to Ariel, the little mermaid, who was having a nip or two and met Chrissy (of <a href="http://thelacedangel.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">The Laced Angel</a>) and of being really cool. I had a little cocktail, some good chat and got my sew on. The whole drinking with a mermaid thing put me in a good mood, so I made a lot of progress. <br />

Now somehow or other it was TIME FOR THE GALA. I know time must have passed slower than that, but between the tears and the vodka, I don't remember it passing. I literally couldn't have dressed without Tanya and Melissa. They ironed my dress, sewed on a hook and eye, hot glued my bodice flowers, etc. Melissa even had to SEW ME INTO MY DRESS. I had to be sewn into my dress because my corset did fit me, very tightly and the bodice was now too loose.<br />
<br />
They were ready before me and looking fantastic by the way. These photos are "borrowed" from Jennifer. <br />

Once Ken and I hit the red carpet and then entered the Gala, it all was worth it. Everyone was stunning. The food was excellent. I met Gina of ( <a href="http://beauty4ashes7.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Beauty From Ashes</a>) and of super talent. <br />

Gina also managed to get a great picture of Ken and I in all our glory. There are things I will change on the dress (not being sewn into it for a start) but all in all I was pretty happy and Ken is so great at dressing himself. I did have to beg off early because my corset was just too tight and even though my friend Mary tried to help loosen my stays, I just couldn't move. <br />

I learned some hard lessons this day. Finish the garments you plan to wear to events before Costume College, no matter how little you think you have to do. Friends are good to have,especially when they can also sew. There is no substitute for an actual bustle under a bustle dress. Don't tight lace your corset when you have eaten all the carbs. There is no anxiety attack too great that it can't be helped by drinking gin with mermaids.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00743696158454339015noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311143154365625848.post-64168094410509212842014-08-13T17:18:00.001-07:002014-08-13T17:18:21.183-07:00Costume College Friday BlurFriday. Friday? Friday......? Friday at Costume College kind of went by in a blur. Let's see. We woke up at the crack of 6:30. (we did this every day, not even on purpose) The L.A. sunshine sweetly singing to us like little birds. This is a good thing, since we had so much to do. Well, I actually had very little to do, since I'd cancelled my tour to FIDM. I thought I would end up taking more classes or work on my Gala dress or something. I didn't really end up doing that.<br />
<br />
We did make it down to the Freshman Orientation at 9:00am. Poor Elizabeth, who was giving us the orientation had very little sleep. She managed to be funny and informative at the same time anyway. Here's a "proof of being awake" selfie courtesy of Tanya.<br />

I'm becoming very aware of the fact that there are very few costume pictures on here. I am the worst blogger ever. I don't even own a camera. Thank goodness for other people.<br />

Ah, I also managed to take in an 18th century hair demonstration from Kendra from <a href="http://demodecouture.com/" target="_blank">DeMode Couture</a> . I think that was Friday. Note to self, "blog right after you get back from an event. You are a flibbertygibbet" She wrote and amazing book on styling your own hair or a wig in 18th century style. There are definitely tips in there for working with wigs and hairpieces from any time period. <br />

Then what happened? I spent a bunch of time in my hotel room watching tv and sewing my gala dress. This was necessary as it was becoming increasingly obvious that it was not going to be finished in time. Then Melissa and Tanya came and rescued me with early entry tickets to the amazing marketplace that was set up in the hotel. I fell in love with one stall in particular.<a href="http://www.acmenotions.com/index.html" target="_blank">Acme Notions.</a><br />

Then all of a sudden it was time for the Ice Cream Social! Time she does fly. I had my beaded flapper dress made from an eighties dress to wear and at the marketplace I found old fashioned Roll Garters. These are basically just giant hair ties that hold your your stockings up without having to wear a garter belt. There's a really great explanation of what that was for on the <a href="http://www.vintagedancer.com/1920s/rolled-stockings/" target="_blank">Vintage Dancer site</a>. I also scored a cute pink flask which I tucked in my garter.<br />
<br />
The flask looks just like this. <br />

Somehow we manged to be late. Poor Melissa was still sewing sequins on her dress, so Tanya and I went down to check it out. She looked AMAZING. She will no doubt have fabulous photos on her own blog, <a href="http://sewingwiththebenevolentdevil.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Sewing with the Benevolent Devil</a>. By the time we got there, the ice cream was all gone, so we did the logical thing and skipped out to the bar.<br />

Much like actual college, my fondest memories are less about the academics and more about the people I met. First let me introduce my roomates. Tanya and Melissa. Thursday Night was a 70's meetup for friends from <a href="http://www.gbacg.org/" target="_blank">The Greater Bay Area Costume Guild</a>. The official CoCo theme was Tiki Party, but we flew in the face of rules. Mwahaaaahaa. (There are no rules) Very different women with very different housekeeping habits. Okay, well SOME of us were very messy and liked the room really cold and SOME of us were very tidy and would have liked it a little warmer. In order to protect the innocent, I will not say which is which. (although, I'm pretty sure you guys know which one I am)<br />

One of the things I noticed about Costume College, is how easy it was to talk to people. I can be a little introverted sometimes. Oh, I can ACT like an extrovert, especially with a little gin in me, but most of the time I get nervous around new people. This is one of the few places I've been to where it was easy to make friends. I'm not even kidding, pretty much everyone in this picture became friends with each other with something like, "You're pretty. I like your dress. Do you want to be my friend?" <br />

So that was Thursday. I'll do separate posts of the other days. <br />
<br />
I promise to post more detail and better photos as they roll in. There are some great pictures on Flickr. Here are some more of the pool party. <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/74042453@N00/sets/72157645766831489/" target="_blank">Costume College Pool Party 2014</a>. Well, only one more sleep til I check in at the Marriott. I'm so glad we are checking in a day early. I'll be doing some last minute sewing. I know I won't be alone. I'm holding off on purpose on some of the trimming for my plaid bodice, because there will be vendors at the hotel and I might want to incorporate some of the trims on offer. Because I was originally going to take a tour on Friday, I have a large span of time to do with what I want. If I'm feeling confident that my work is done, I'll drop in on some classes. If I'm freaking out, I can use the "<a href="http://129.121.107.232/~costumer/college/at-costume-college/panic-room/" target="_blank">panic room</a>" on Friday night and maybe get some help.<br />
<br />
Turns out I don't have to come up with a costume for the pool party, because our 1970's birthday party meetup is the same time. I'll be rocking a Penny Lane in Almost Famous kind of aesthetic.Well maybe a Penny Lane meets Rhoda aesthetic. We'll see.<br />

NOT OKAY. I only ask that my back stops freaking out in time for CoCo, but even if I have to hand sew that b*tch flat on my back, I WILL finish my gala dress.<br />
<br />
In other random CoCo creation news. Here's some stuff. There are several events happening at Costume College that I need costumes for.<br />
<br />
Event #1. The Pool Party. This is a Tiki Party theme. I was going to make a 50's style bra top and sarong skirt to wear. Using this pattern. Guess what happened.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Clue: My boobs are bigger than hers that's what happened. It looks terrible.</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>

So, with so little time left, I'm going to have to kind of throw this one together. <br />

I also have a cute retro cherry print bathing suit from <a href="http://www.pinupgirlclothing.com/" target="_blank">Pinup Girl Clothing</a> that I wore for my 50th birthday party. If I throw on a wiggle skirt and those shoes, I can call that done.<br />

I just feel a tad badly about that, because they are announcing the scholarship winners then and I don't want anyone to think "oh, she sure did earn that scholarship with that turbee twist get up"<br />
<br />
Event #2. An unofficial shared birthday party with a 70's theme. Again, no time to make anything, so I think I'm just going to take a page from my girl Rhoda Morgenstern's playbook and make it all about a scarf. I also have a black halter, bellbottom jumsuit I can wear with this.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I wanted to grow up to BE Rhoda</td></tr>

Event #3 The Ice Cream Social. Club Ice. I did a remake on this one. My daughter had a 1980's sequined dress. I removed the shoulder pads and sleeves to make it more of a 20's vibe. I need to make a headpiece of some sort and maybe re-attach the sleeves to the dress, but at this point I don't know if I'll have the time.<br />

Here are some pictures so you can see a little bit of what I have been doing. Unfortunately, one of the main things I have been doing, is undoing. I lined the overskirt in orange to match the plaid and it was just obnoxious. <br />

Lots of lessons learned on this project. First and foremost; assume everything will end up being seen and don't cut corners in the beginning or it will bite you in the bustle later.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00743696158454339015noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311143154365625848.post-6312658933774271652014-07-10T13:01:00.001-07:002014-07-10T13:01:43.336-07:00Switching GearsIt seems to be the time of year for "sorry, I haven't blogged for so long, but I was doing stuff". I will echo that sentiment. I just got back from the <a href="http://www.highsierramusic.com/" target="_blank">High Sierra Music Festival</a>. Four days of music, camping, and general merriment with good friends. There are definitely costumes involved. Not quite at the Burning Man level, but lots of glitter and facepaint. Very very fun, but also filthy. So much dust everywhere, so I don't bring my fancy costumes. I definitely dress differently from every day. Both more colorful and less covered up. It's HOT.<br />
<br />
So here is a picture of me 'doing stuff'<br />

I know I'm not alone in this. There is a syndrome known as Costumers ADD, which is the problem of the next project always being more exciting than the one you are actually working on. Of course, I have actual ADHD which adds to the problem. The good news is that THESE ARE MY PEOPLE! A whole community of people who have my same issue with follow through. Staying up to finish things the night before and quite often still sewing in the car on the way to the event. Sigh, I'm finally home.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8fL4U1II_wvVYispeKAPOFntilJakRb7hZFLMrMi4_ymr-Hh8WdDR7oREOIbXjjeUZIB5VIoDtaXgTUpAmRC5xe0xCzeSo37G6vtUPpaF4SqavxSoMyfaSkS1U-uoP8ExBjMyiJHe2kw/s1600/the-creative-process.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8fL4U1II_wvVYispeKAPOFntilJakRb7hZFLMrMi4_ymr-Hh8WdDR7oREOIbXjjeUZIB5VIoDtaXgTUpAmRC5xe0xCzeSo37G6vtUPpaF4SqavxSoMyfaSkS1U-uoP8ExBjMyiJHe2kw/s1600/the-creative-process.gif" height="262" width="400" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<br />
On that note, my favorite thing to do is creative procrastination. I'm achieving something. I'm constructing or deconstructing something, just not necessarily the thing I should be doing. If I'm really lucky, my creative procrastination will actually help my current project move along.<br />
<br />
Hopefully, this will be one of those things. I need shoes for my Costume College Gala dress. My dress is going to be an early bustle, late 1860's, early 1870's gown. I need shoes. I honestly really had no idea what victorian shoes looked like. All I ever seemed to see were boots, but I know they didn't wear boots to a ball, amIright? So hi ho, hi ho, it's off to the efficiently helpful <strike>dark pit of slack</strike>, <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/Esmeralda169/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>.<br />
<br />
Essentially, I'm looking at something like this:<br />

The sort of look like ballet slippers with heels. I found a pair of shoes at the thrift store.<br />

These are the wrong color and a little too..solid..for dance shoes, but I like the heel. My plan is to cover them with fabric or repaint them. <br />

I have to decide what color to make them, since I'll be wearing them with the orange and blue plaid. I think black will be the easiest. They will also only peak out of the dress, so they don't have to be perfect. So off I go to rese...oh screw it, play on Pinterest some more.<br />
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00743696158454339015noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311143154365625848.post-48883420534619639052014-06-18T17:26:00.001-07:002014-06-18T17:26:26.252-07:00Never have I everNever have I ever......matched plaids<br />
Never have I ever......worked with silk taffeta<br />
Never have I ever......made a Victorian Bustle Gown<br />
<br />
So this makes perfect sense, since I have a whole month (not including work days, vacation in July, and sleeping) to make it.<br />
<br />
Here's a sneak peak of my Costume College Gala dress.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHu1rUpUU_mIr_0CXKRgb9XkdSvp1tJsnT8E1JPHIl6lYJnearf9f_2-7S0ILobfbe6VxOnDcg98sn2a0qDogfWP2NYZZK68qZ_vMRwAKua-EDoCKPWedC8R2s0Od5ONRysEeymvHOPDc/s1600/IMG_2286.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHu1rUpUU_mIr_0CXKRgb9XkdSvp1tJsnT8E1JPHIl6lYJnearf9f_2-7S0ILobfbe6VxOnDcg98sn2a0qDogfWP2NYZZK68qZ_vMRwAKua-EDoCKPWedC8R2s0Od5ONRysEeymvHOPDc/s1600/IMG_2286.JPG" height="303" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Not the WORST for someone who has never matched plaids</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The inside of the bodice needs to be boned. The directions say to make bone casings and sewing them to the interlining, but I'm all like, "I'm doing a lining anyway, why don't I just hand sew some channels and put the boning between the interlining and lining? <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG-q5pSeb8UHKCF7coZuLX7AkI1Xi2QZH0TTgxHpgIeJ8pM1Ar42J8BLnXyJ5-5BlPHytaFyKuirTdTgYpqUzQY7a8UGO3F7WyFiAiU_FQG5VFYt0yyFoXPtxsidYV-_8u-2FqP3kbHsA/s1600/IMG_2288.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG-q5pSeb8UHKCF7coZuLX7AkI1Xi2QZH0TTgxHpgIeJ8pM1Ar42J8BLnXyJ5-5BlPHytaFyKuirTdTgYpqUzQY7a8UGO3F7WyFiAiU_FQG5VFYt0yyFoXPtxsidYV-_8u-2FqP3kbHsA/s1600/IMG_2288.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Because I shouldn't smoke crack before I hand sew</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
No one would really be looking at the lining, so I don't really mind the uneven sewing (the dark lines are disappearing ink, so they wouldn't show after I ironed it). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The problem is sewing the lining in. If I do the boning channels, then instead of sewing the two pieces right side together and then turning it, I would have to stitch it together afterwards. This would be fine if it didn't have these pleats in it. I don't know if I am making sense, but I think it would be wonky.<br />
<br />
So I'm going to unpick the channels and sew the boning in with casings. You know, like they said to do in the first place before I decided to be such a smarty pants.<br />
<br />
In other news; my corset doesn't fit. I was bigger when I made it, so the lacing in the back completely meets and doesn't reduce my waist at all. I'm telling you right now that my pretty plaid bodice is NOT going to fit without some semi-tight lacing.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY7lOpW2B9n5_DAgwA0b-VK2-eyp2AA_bDTxynVXjMyzoeRW0E4Bbids-j4766z02nadMPlr2c__v5KaxxEcrJuhgn9S7Cp4L9_cpcdeVApNU7imu2ETXFNAicOTzmJ2iQ6YqXTmmbm6w/s1600/corset+back+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY7lOpW2B9n5_DAgwA0b-VK2-eyp2AA_bDTxynVXjMyzoeRW0E4Bbids-j4766z02nadMPlr2c__v5KaxxEcrJuhgn9S7Cp4L9_cpcdeVApNU7imu2ETXFNAicOTzmJ2iQ6YqXTmmbm6w/s1600/corset+back+1.jpg" height="320" width="255" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This photo is of the corset 20 pounds ago.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
It's also a little bulky because it has three layers and the binding is too thick. Since I used expensive spring coil bones and it's essentially a good shape, I'm going to unbind it and figure out how to take in a seam without undoing the whole thing. I just don't have time. I'll then rebind it with something a little less bulky.<br /><br />
Never have I ever....done any of the above things. So...bottoms up!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00743696158454339015noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-311143154365625848.post-23599536974174752882014-06-16T12:14:00.000-07:002014-06-16T12:14:51.783-07:00Asilomar Pictures at lastSo, you may remember a month or so ago, I was complaining about the <a href="http://distracteddressmaker.blogspot.com/2014/04/its-my-blog-and-ill-ill-cry-if-i-want-to.html" target="_blank">Edwardian Blouse </a>that I just couldn't make work. Of course you do, you read my blog cover to cover. Well, I found two cute reproduction patterns that will work perfectly. For the top:<br />

And this perfect 70's skirt:<br />

I wish this photo weren't quite so blurry. I'm posting it for several reasons. Mostly because I loved these bias cut skirts and halter tops my Mom used to wear and I would love to make some for myself to wear now. My babysitter (blonde on the left) is wearing one of my Mom's outfits, My Mom in the maroon halter jumpsuit and me thinking I look really hot in my Mom's halter and skirt, and kind of succeeding except that A) I am 12 and B) my boobs were not going to arrive for another year. But I am trying. Man I am so dark. I spent that summer doing "we must, we must, we must improve our bust" I seem to be wearing some kind of upper arm wrap bracelet. Man my Mom was stylie.</div>

This post is about figuring out my priorities and sticking to them instead of going off in every shiny direction.<br />
<br />
First off is my Gala dress. The Gala is the night that everyone shows off their most schmancy pants dress. There isn't really a particular time period, so the sky is the limit. I am a poor little church mouse (lapsed), so I am going to use the very understated orange and blue silk fabric I won in the<a href="http://www.gbacg.org/" target="_blank"> Greater Bay Area Costume Guild</a> raffle. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Now would be a good time to put on your sunglasses</td></tr>

Is going to be a 19th century transitional dress. From the mid-1860s to the early 1870s, fashion was starting to change from the huge crinolines or hoops of the Civil War period to the 'Baby got Back' bustles of the mid1880's. Crazy wild colors and plaid were around at that time, analine dyes (the first chemical dyes) had been invented and the Victorians went buck wild for them.So we are going from this:<br />

The dress I'm making will fall somewhere in between. I'll be using Truly Victorian Patterns.<br />
